2. To Falaza Lodge, False Bay





An easy drive to our “tented room” in Fazala Lodge, in a small private reserve just outside the National Park. A bonus was the amount of game visible around the boundary fence of the lodge.

The left hand giraffe had an appalling wound from a big cat attack.

We had two forays into the park in the game truck, the first with a 5.30 am start, very chilly and then wet (the only rain of the trip) and then an evening drive. We were now in the Hluhluwe National Park, one of the largest in the country.  Some stunning and mixed scenery plus a variety of game. It being the start of our holiday we didn’t feel pressure to see “ everything “ all at once which made for a more relaxing experience.

Not so much when, near the exit gate as the park was about to close a elephant in musk charged the vehicles ahead of us, causing chaos on the road with some cars reversing, some turning, general chaos but hey, we were with the guide who knew what to do.

We also took ourselves off for a hike in the reserve, pleasant enough though our first experience of the National game park's staff complete indifference to their guests and lack of knowledge of what is around them resulted in a false start.

Our guide book said there were no predators in this section of the reserve but on the way round there was a notice pointing out the motion cameras set up to monitor the cheetahs!

Our return trip across the border was less painful and we had an easy drive into Kasane which is on the Chobe River, one of the best game viewing areas in the country. have pig, will travel Much of the game can be viewed from the Chobe river on the little shallow draft craft operated by the lodge, which is a few yards across a lawn, frequented by warthog and hippo. 7. Spion Kop and the battlefield sites

Walks in Africa had really recommended the Three Trees resort on the edge of the Spion Kop National Park and the nearby battlefield sites.  The history of the Boer war and battle field tours are important for both S.Africa and the tourism industry. We were not sure it was for us but  Angus at Walks in Africa had said that the a tour offered by the hotel was unmissable.  Our little tin cabin overlooking the reserve and Spionkop battlefield was spectacular and with the loan of a yoga mat, a special Pilates location. the view from our cabin of the moon rising over the battlefield sites Nic had a horse ride alongside the reserve spotting game from the saddle; whilst trying to stay in the saddle on a hairy ride. not that she was glad that I had dismounted. 9. The adventure begins...Khumaga Campsite, Makagadikgadi National Park

Prosaically enough, our adventure began with a drive into Maun, to Woollies to stock up with food and drink for the trip, this being essentially the main shopping opportunity to find fresh or indeed other provisions whilst in Botswana. The girls went a bit crazy at the opportunity to buy what was basically M and S UK food at vast prices! Smoked salmon anyone? In the meantime the men stocked up on the alcohol. We also bought large bundles of firewood from the roadside vendors for our cooking fires. The drive to our first camp was supposed to be relatively easy and on sealed roads whilst we adjusted to our lumbering land cruisers and it was until we turned off the wrong track and found ourselves in deep, deep sand heading off into even more the middle of nowhere.   We were lucky enough not to get bogged down but it was a chastening experience.
