18. To Third Bridge and Xakanaxa Campsites, Moremi Game Reserve

Back on the road again except there was nothing like a road and two of the bridges were too dangerous to cross.

The closest we came to civilisation ; at least we could buy some more firewood.

The route finding was really difficult and we came across groups who were lost and/bogged down.We had our moments too with Llama having to be towed out by Hippo ; a lion roaring in the nearby bush encouraged a speedy digging out process.

We enjoyed peaceful morning and late afternoon boat trips from Xakanaxa

Our last drive ourselves started with a rather uneventful drive but ended with maybe our most exciting sighting of the trip captured in a great picture by Jeanette.

Our return trip across the border was less painful and we had an easy drive into Kasane which is on the Chobe River, one of the best game viewing areas in the country. have pig, will travel Much of the game can be viewed from the Chobe river on the little shallow draft craft operated by the lodge, which is a few yards across a lawn, frequented by warthog and hippo. 7. Spion Kop and the battlefield sites

Walks in Africa had really recommended the Three Trees resort on the edge of the Spion Kop National Park and the nearby battlefield sites.  The history of the Boer war and battle field tours are important for both S.Africa and the tourism industry. We were not sure it was for us but  Angus at Walks in Africa had said that the a tour offered by the hotel was unmissable.  Our little tin cabin overlooking the reserve and Spionkop battlefield was spectacular and with the loan of a yoga mat, a special Pilates location. the view from our cabin of the moon rising over the battlefield sites Nic had a horse ride alongside the reserve spotting game from the saddle; whilst trying to stay in the saddle on a hairy ride. not that she was glad that I had dismounted. The tour of the battlefield sites was indeed not to be missed. 9. The adventure begins...Khumaga Campsite, Makagadikgadi National Park

Prosaically enough, our adventure began with a drive into Maun, to Woollies to stock up with food and drink for the trip, this being essentially the main shopping opportunity to find fresh or indeed other provisions whilst in Botswana. The girls went a bit crazy at the opportunity to buy what was basically M and S UK food at vast prices! Smoked salmon anyone? In the meantime the men stocked up on the alcohol. We also bought large bundles of firewood from the roadside vendors for our cooking fires. The drive to our first camp was supposed to be relatively easy and on sealed roads whilst we adjusted to our lumbering land cruisers and it was until we turned off the wrong track and found ourselves in deep, deep sand heading off into even more the middle of nowhere.   We were lucky enough not to get bogged down but it was a chastening experience.
